This thesis argues that Infinite Jest is in fact a far-reaching and damning assessment of post-millennial American culture, a culture in which many fail to reach adulthood with any real sense of self, and that the novel lays much of the blame on parents’ inability to provide the type of early childhood conditions essential to healthy development. Many, however, see the meaning of the novel as elusive and some question whether it is really anything more than the author’s rambling commentary on the many topics that interest him, from competitive youth tennis, to addiction and twelve step treatment programs, to the danger posed by the ever increasing effectiveness of passive entertainment in allowing people to escape themselves. Infinite Jest, David Foster Wallace’s second novel and the one that established his reputation as a literary genius, has attracted a sizable and loyal following notwithstanding its size and complexity.
